poemaday

(a hasty refection on Midsummer by Louise Glük)

you are my embodiment - all diversity

a poet wrote of God

speaking of us all as one in the eyes of One who is many

yet our eyes fixed like telescopes on some enlargement of our selves

in the field bound by our time wandering freely the weeds and the leaves flower heads and bees with all the atmosphere above inviting simply: open and breathe

dad grew from the Dust Bowl Kansas farms, dead soil from pushing too hard leaving weeds to eat from ditches government lard stocks and always promises

he tells me, you reap what you sow

as humble dads might in that quiet way wisdom proves it is lived

whether the earth turns or the sky above moves for them little matters to most

but at least the first far star as our star fades seen on our rocky walk cuts the bright noise of day with its own little whole of light in the great roll around us

of all particles God created into motion this one orbiting orbits expanding entropy to dissolve into dust with each vector known

talking to the living ping pongs along even when the bounce lands in deeper ponds, mud and muck sticking as a common weight might

the dead don't play games however long ago they left you, on a one-sided field over time hearing only what was never said, imagined or implied, forgotten or revealed in what thoughts you never bother to consider when they are able with words to let you know they are here

who am i to decide if one might live or die stood on my abstract perch, talons ready to weed out a plan whose high price as they vie somehow seems soley mine to reckon seemingly from above

a great girth of a man heaves his breath next to me a labor to remain alive one more day

more determined obliviously to fight fate he lets loose happy little tunes in forced pushes

and i can't help but imagine him sometimes even scared his songs alone at night will soon end

my body teaches through twists, closed eyes opening back in time showing the buried crook in neck, shoulder locked and turned to open the feeling i once knew again like a broken snapped-heart stick released today in a slow drawn smile

tracks, hard lines in parallel efficiently route to the one horizon we all agreed mostly to travel in ease and comfort, smooth speeds people in seats expecting the familiar clap clap of small gaps as the fast earth moves on under bare feet
